The African Sable is a sleek graceful animal while the Black Mamba is revered for a totally different reason. Each stands in direct contrast to one another and represents in many ways the forces of good and evil in our world today.
Scott used these two subjects because they encompass both ends of the spectrum. The pairing makes a great conversation piece. The sable and snake are in a deadly dance where the viewer must decide the fate of each. Does the snake make a successful strike or does the sable jump to safety? Maybe the better question is whether the sable crushes the snake beneath its hooves.
While I have never traveled to Africa Scott has been there on 4 different occasions. He loves Africa and tells me that I would love the people and the unique shopping. Every journey has resulted in at least one snake story. Most of the time the stories center around how much the native people dislike the snakes. It is understandable considering the fact that Africa has many poisonous snakes. A healthy fear is probably important for longevity.
The patina on this sculpture is standard bronze with buffed highlights. The cape buffalo skull including in the piece has a life-like coloration.
